Yoga Nidra & NSDR in Palm Springs

A guide to yogic sleep, non-sleep deep rest, and how to begin.

Yoga Nidra is a guided practice of deep, conscious rest. You lie down, follow a voice, and drift into the space between waking and sleep, where the body lets go of what it holds all day. You may also know it as NSDR, or non-sleep deep rest, a modern name for the same state.

What is Yoga Nidra?

Often translated as "yogic sleep," Yoga Nidra is an ancient practice of guided rest. A session usually moves through:

  • Settling and intention: arriving, and planting a short, heartfelt intention (sankalpa)
  • Body awareness: a slow rotation of attention through the body
  • Breath: noticing, then softening the breath
  • Sensation and imagery: gently moving through contrasting sensations and images
  • Deep rest: a quiet stretch at the threshold of sleep, where the nervous system can settle

You don't need experience, flexibility, or a quiet mind. You only need to lie down and listen.

Yoga Nidra vs. NSDR

NSDR (non-sleep deep rest) is a term popularized in recent years to describe practices that bring you into deep rest without falling asleep. Yoga Nidra is the traditional practice at the heart of it. A typical NSDR script is a shortened, secular version of Yoga Nidra. A traditional Yoga Nidra practice goes further: intention, layered awareness, and time to rest in stillness.

Who it's for

People come to Yoga Nidra when:

  • their mind won't switch off and rest never feels like rest
  • they're running on stress, or recovering from burnout
  • sleep has stopped restoring them
  • they want a practice that asks nothing of a tired body

Yoga Nidra is a wellness practice, not medical treatment. If you're dealing with a health condition, talk to your doctor alongside any practice.

How to practice with me

Questions

Is Yoga Nidra the same as meditation? It's a form of meditation, but you do it lying down and fully guided, so there's nothing to "do right." Many people who struggle with seated meditation find it far easier.

What if I fall asleep? That's okay. Your body is taking the rest it needs. With practice, many people stay aware longer.

How long is a session? Guided practices range from 25 to 45 minutes. Private sessions with me run 60 to 90 minutes, including a short conversation before you lie down.

Can I do it online? Yes. Yoga Nidra translates beautifully online: you only need a quiet place to lie down and headphones.

Where do you teach in person? At Swaha Yoga in Rancho Mirage, CasaPrana in Indio, in my own home or at the comfort of your own home accross the Coachella Valley or the High Desert. (travel fees apply for locations more than 30 min away from Palm Desert).
